What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Jamie Skeie Society, family, friends, and enemies will always be against you. Sure…you will have an awesome support group of fans, family, and friends who will always love you. They will see you for who you are on the inside. They will love you for being you, and for writing from your heart. However, you will have other people who envy your lifestyle..cause you are doing something they could never do. So, make sure you never let the people closest to you bring you down. I believe you really need to have it inside your heart to become the person you want to be. Don’t ever give up on becoming the person you need to be. You need to follow your heart. People get careers for three reasons…attention, love, and money. Personally, I have always done things out of love. I believe doing things out of love is what builds your character. That’s what is real… Attention, and money just builds your reputation. So, if you really have it inside your heart to become a writer…just follow your heart.

What are you currently working on?

Jamie Skeie I just completed the final edit of Orion the Star: The Purple Purse Merman. I am really excited to publish it for all of you to read. There is a lot of love and meaning behind it. It’s kind of a tongue twister, and it is a really fun read. I just finished sketching out all of the illustrations. One of my illustrators is completing the artwork now. Then, I will finish formatting it and create the book cover. I have all of my heart in this book right now. Excited to publish it and start working on the next ones. It’s really funny when people ask me the name of my newest book. I reply in my deep voice, “The Purple Purse Merman.”

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Jamie Skeie I was writing down ideas for book titles on a piece of paper. When I wrote down, The Purple Purse Merman, it was a joke at first. It just sounded funny. I crossed off Merman and wrote “Mermaid JK” as a note to myself…but kept laughing about the idea of a purple merman with a purple purse. My oldest son is almost a teenager, so I thought it would be a funny joke to play on him. So, I dedicated the book to him…to “troll” him like as we like to call it. At first I hope he’s like, “Dad, what in the….” Then, I hope he loves the book, hugs it, holds it, and sees the real meaning behind it. Often times, people judge books, and people “based off the cover.” The Purple Purse Merman is about accepting people…even if they are purple.

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Jamie Skeie Writer’s block does not exist. It is merely an excuse people give themselves. I believe your mind is always writing. So, quit typing or writing with a pen. Allow your imagination to create your story in your mind..without rushing to get it written. Sometimes, you also need to quit thinking with your mind. And, simply, write from your heart. Your story will come together.
